Khella, an introduction

Some information Its scientific name is Ammi Visgana. But it’s also known as Ammi Visnage, Ammi élevé, or Visgana Daucoides. Well, less formally, it’s also known as “toothpick herb.” Because of its bright white, umbrella-like flowers, it’s also called “St. Gallen embroidery.” This refers to this meticulous ancient art, whose form and color bear similarities to this plant. As for the term “Khella,” it comes from the Arabic language. This plant is notably called this in Morocco, where it is primarily used as a natural toothpick.  Its origins However, the earliest traces of Khella can be found in ancient Egypt. Indeed, this herb was considered a medicinal plant. Essential oil was made from Khella, which was used to treat asthma and other respiratory problems, as well as kidney stones.   Its name “Ammi” is derived from the Latin “ammos,” which refers to sand—the environment in which this plant thrives.

From Plant to Natural Toothpick

A unique herb Khella is a plant that grows similarly to fennel. It withers by the end of summer. Its flowers form an umbel. This means that all the flower stalks grow from the same base on the stem. When the plant dries, the rays harden until they resemble small spikes. Khella can then be used for good dental hygiene.We offer this natural toothpick in a pack of 5 dried flowers. Since each flower contains between 20 and 40 toothpicks, this pack contains about a hundred organic and eco-friendly toothpicks. This product is 100% natural and gentle on the teeth.  A plant… reminiscent of another This plant may remind you of another species, particularly well-known in the Maghreb countries. It is the siwak. This stick is a root derived from the Salvadora Persica species. It is also called the araq stick. It can be used as a natural toothbrush and offers incredible benefits for oral hygiene. When used alongside your Khella natural toothpicks, you can be sure you’re choosing a zero-waste routine: 100% eco-friendly, better for your health, and the environment.

The Khella: What Are the Benefits?

This natural toothpick perfectly fulfills its primary function. It can thus replace traditional wooden toothpicks, which are often small and not very sturdy. The Khella will therefore allow you to remove food debris lodged between your teeth. The Khella also offers several benefits:

  • When rubbed against the teeth, it releases a natural substance beneficial for gum health;
  • This tooth stick is effective in combating gum inflammation;
  • It reduces bleeding that can occur while brushing, using a toothpick, or flossing;
  • This medicinal toothpick is recommended for people with particularly sensitive teeth and gums.

However, there is another use for Khella. This is particularly common in Morocco. The flower clusters are boiled to make a decoction, which is then consumed as a medicinal drink. This offers the following benefits:

  • Effective against toothaches;
  • These flower heads are recommended for treating oral abscesses, canker sores, and gingivitis;
  • It can help soothe palpitations and treat diabetes;
  • In the Maghreb, Khella is often used to treat prostate congestion.

How to use Khella?

Take a Khella flower head, then break off one of its rays (a stem). You can then gently run it between your teeth to remove food particles. Khella is generally used after main meals, such as lunch or dinner. But it can easily be used throughout your day. It’s a discreet practice that allows you to care for your teeth in any situation. Be careful, however, not to use natural toothpicks multiple times a day or for extended periods. Also, make sure to use it gently so it isn’t too harsh.

A few tips…

Each toothpick is for single use only. It is therefore not recommended to reuse your toothpick multiple times. This is for hygiene reasons. You can easily carry your dried flower with you wherever you go. The 100% cotton travel pouch is perfect for keeping your toothpicks close at hand. No matter where you are! Its light beige color evokes purity and naturalness. Ideal, then, if you want to live more sustainably and responsibly. Your pouch can also hold all your cosmetics, such as your Tahara musk or kohl.
